Requiem for a Kitty

It is with sadness that I note the death of my friend Kathryn's cat, Miss Mocha. Mocha died today at age 14, and she will be greatly missed. I met Mocha when I was in college, and Mocha and I developed a fondness for each other. She had the coolest feline personality that I have ever come across. She was curious, intelligent, and somewhere along the way decided that she was the princess of the house. She could be a very sociable cat (at least for humans), and not aloof or distant like some cats are.

I hope that in kitty heaven she will always have sunny days outside, that there will be many hair ties to hunt, and that there will always be a friendly hand to pet her when she needs it.

I thought I might share a story about one of Mocha's amusing traits. Mocha liked to "hunt" hair ties, especially the fuzzy varieties. Hair ties would end up all over the house. If I was house sitting or visiting Kathryn, sometimes Mocha would bring back a hair tie in the middle of the night. She would then meow until I sort of woke up, and I would groggily flop an arm over the side of the bed and mumble something like ,"Good kitty...". A little furry head would nudge my hand, and I would more or less pet her head. After all, fine motor skills are a little lacking when one is still mostly asleep. There would be instant kitty happiness, and it was like someone flipped a switch to turn on the purring machine. I would then fall back asleep, and she would go back to prowling the house.

I discovered later that Mocha's behavior wasn't all that unusual. Cats will sometimes bring their prey back to the group as a form of social bonding. That's why you are supposed to praise your cat if she happens to leave you a dead bird on your doorstep. I'm very glad that Mocha liked hunting hair ties instead!
